This cameo depicts Psyche, the Greek goddess of soul and consort of Eros/ Cupid. In the Victorian era, Psyche, willing to risk death and to go, literally, to the end of the earth in order to be reunited with her beloved Cupid, epitomized the womanly virtues of devotion and constancy in love.
